Ladder of Kotor

4.8(2,104 reviews)
CategoryTrail

A stone staircase of seventy-odd switchbacks that lifts you from sea level up the wall behind the bay — one of the most dramatic ascents in Europe if you go at dawn. Start early (it bakes by 10am), carry water, and plan to lunch at the rustic Nevjesta Jadrana tavern near the top.

What we love

  • A route that rewards the effort — views that reorganise how you think about the country.
  • Well-marked and documented enough to attempt confidently, wild enough to still feel earned.
  • Best in shoulder season when the coast is hot and the peaks are clear.
